- Imperial Guardians #1 by Dan Abnett, Marcelo Ferreira, Jay Leisten, and Rachelle Rosenberg with VC's Cory Petit was released today by Marvel Comics. The issue features a main cover by Sean Izaakse with Nolan Woodard, and variant covers by Iván Talavera, Michele Bandini with Marcelo Maiolo, and Netho Diaz with JP Mayer and Arthur Hesli. The series is essentially a re-branded Guardians of the Galaxy book with a new lineup led by Gamora and including former New Warrior Darkhawk. The issue follows the events of last year's Imperial mini-series and the one-shot Imperial War: Imperial Guardians #1. A preview of the issue was released last week. Marvel described the issue with the following:
Gamora, Captain Marvel, Amadeus Cho, Darkhawk, Cosmic Ghost Rider! Five unlikely operatives recruited by Maximus of the Inhumans. Their mission? Protect the delicate balance of new Galactic Union by ANY means necessary…and failure is NOT an option. Expendable, deniable and disavowed, they are the Imperial Guardians. But can they do Maximus' dirty work and keep their consciences clean? Why has a Kree Grand Admiral gone rogue and attacked Hala? What's going on with Darkhawk's mind? What deluded fool thought COSMIC GHOST RIDER was a team player? And, most importantly... what kind of game is Maximus REALLY playing?
- Mark Bagley, the first regular artist of the original New Warriors series, sadly had to cancel his appearance at this weekend's Pop Culture Con in Spring, Texas, just north of Houston. On Facebook, he revealed that recovery from a recent medical procedure has taken longer than expected, so out of caution, he will stay home. A follow-up post addressed subsequent concerns from fans over his health and his tendency to no longer draw interior pages:
I had a procedure a few weeks ago, something fairly minor, but I’m having a little bit of trouble recovering from it. And we’re talking just discomfort and that sort of thing. So everybody don’t worry though I appreciate the concern. The reason I’m not doing interiors anymore is that even though I still love Comics. And still love drawing. I just don’t want to do the grind of interiors. I’m doing covers and commissions and going to conventions. I think you’ll have me to kick around for a while longer.
At one point, Mark Bagley was one of the most prolific artists at Marvel Comics. In 1991 and 1992, he was simultaneously drawing both New Warriors and Amazing Spider-Man, which double-shipped for 3 months in 1991. Between his lengthy runs on Amazing Spider-Man and Ultimate Spider-Man, no one has drawn more issues of a solo Spider-Man comic. He has more than earned his choice of work and a break from the grind. We wish Mark Bagley a speedy recovery.

- Marvel Comics revealed today more variant covers for next month's Marvel/DC: Spider-Man/Superman #1, and one of them again includes Ben Reilly as Scarlet Spider. The wraparound homage variant cover by Giuseppe Camuncoli references Civil War #1 and also includes other characters across Spider-Man and Superman comics. This makes the third variant cover between the two publisher's one-shots teaming up their two icons that will include Ben Reilly, who was briefly a New Warrior in the 1990s. Marvel/DC: Spider-Man/Superman #1 will also include a variant cover by Kaare Andrews, and DC's DC/Marvel: Superman/Spider-Man #1, shipping at the end of this month, will be released with a variant cover by Scott Koblish and Hi-Fi.

- Next week's Imperial Guardians #1 was exclusively previewed at Monkeys Fighting Robots today.
