- Sal Buscema died at 89 years old this past Friday, January 23, 2026. The news came from a Facebook post by artist Sterling Clark (his post is embedded below), who was informed by Buscema's wife today on what would have been Sal Buscema's 90th birthday.
Sal Buscema was the artist of the original Nova series, taking over from older brother John Buscema with the third issue until issue 14, released almost a year later in 1977. In 1978, he reunited with his frequent Nova inker Frank Giacoia for Marvel Two-in-One Annual #3, which co-billed Nova with The Thing of the Fantastic Four. In 1981, He drew Rom #24, one of Nova's final appearances until the character's return for the creation of the New Warriors in 1989.
Sal Buscema was a prolific artist for Marvel Comics, contributing art for hundreds of covers and pages for numerous titles a month through the 1970s and '80s. A master storyteller, his dramatic style often featured emotionally charged fight scenes punctuated by memorable panels of heroes impossibly soaring through the air from the impact of a villain's punch. Character faces were often twisted in emotional torment, pushing the drama of any script as far as it could go. In the 1990s, Sal Buscema was the artist on Spectacular Spider-Man for 100 issues. His time on the title included a celebrated run with acclaimed writer JM DeMatteis. His final year on the title included Ben Reilly as Scarlet Spider during the protracted Clone Saga. Other comics guest-starring New Warriors that featured Sal Buscema's artwork: Defenders #5, 26 and #62-64, as well as Avengers #156 and 173, Fantastic Four #208, and Marvel Two-in-One #4 and 8. Our sincere condolences to Sal Buscema's family, friends and fans.
- Marvel Comics released a preliminary look at a variant cover for Nova: Centurion #5. The issue was originally announced to have two variant covers, one by Partha Pratim Sarkar and one by an artist to be announced. A look at Sarkar's cover was released earlier this month. The unannounced artist has now been announced to be Adam Gorham. The cover features Nova and Star Lord, who will reunite in the issue. Nova: Centurion #5 is scheduled to be released March 4, 2026. If you'd like a copy, let your local comic book store know before the final order cut-off date of February 2, 2026. Source: Nova Prime Page.
- I don't generally follow subsequent printings of comics with New Warriors, but this feels noteworthy: A second printing of Nova: Centurion #1 was scheduled to be released this past Wednesday, but was not delivered to retailers by Marvel's distributor. Generally the publication of a second printing is a good sign that a book is selling well, and that retailers have requested additional copies to sell due to demand from their customers. We reached out to Ryan Higgins of Comics Conspiracy in Sunnyvale, California, and he confirmed the second printing did not arrive at his store either. Additionally, the issue no longer appears available to order from the distributor, meaning it has been canceled. Marvel Comics did not send any communications to retailers about this change or any plans to reschedule, but Higgins mentioned it is not uncommon for second printings to be canceled if Marvel does not receive enough orders from retailers. For now we will have to assume the second printing of Nova: Centurion #1 will not be released.
- Nova: Centurion #6 will ship in April 2026, according to information released by Marvel Comics to multiple comics news sites today. - Imperial Guardians #2 will also ship in April 2026. However, the information released to news sites by Marvel Comics indicates the series has been downgraded from an ongoing series to a 5-issue mini-series. Imperial Guardians stars a ragtag team that includes Chris Powell resuming his role as Darkhawk, a frequent ally and reserve member of the New Warriors in the 1990s. The series is notably written by Dan Abnett, co-writer of the celebrated Nova series that ran from 2007 to 2010. The issue is scheduled for a release on April 15, 2026. The following information has been released:
IMPERIAL GUARDIANS #2 (OF 5)

- Today's announcements also confirmed the planned April 2026 release of the following comics expected to include Jubilee, based on earlier announcements:
- Uncanny X-Men Annual #1: on sale April 1 (unconfirmed as a Jubilee appearance)
- Psylocke: Ninja #4: on sale April 8
- Uncanny X-Men #26: on sale April 8 (unconfirmed as a Jubilee appearance but likely based on past issues)
- Jubilee: Deadly Reunion #1: on sale April 29
- Uncanny X-Men #27: on sale April 29 (unconfirmed as a Jubilee appearance but likely based on past issues)
- The End 2099 #5 was also included in the April 2026 announcements. The issue will be on sale April 1st and will feature Nova 2099, although the character was never a member of the New Warriors. It is the finale of the The End mini-series, and the finale of a 2099 trilogy that ran through several recent mini-series written by Steve Orlando (although curiously Frank Tieri was announced to write this issue instead).
- The final bit of news from today's announcements is the confirmation of two collected editions:
- The first is the third Annihilation collected edition in the Modern Epic Collection series. Sub-titled Conquest Prologue, the soft cover will reprint Annihilation: Conquest - Prologue #1, Annihilation: Conquest - Quasar #1-4, Annihilation: Conquest - Star Lord #1-4, and the recap one-shot Annihilation Saga. Nova was heavily featured in the previous two volumes, which reprinted the original Annihilation event. Annihilation Modern Epic Collection: Conquest Prologue runs 272 pages with a cover price of $37.99 and goes on sale June 10, 2026.
- The second is the soft cover collected edition reprinting the Spider-Man '94 mini-series, which features the villain Kaine debuting in the universe set in the Spider-Man animated series that originally aired on the Fox Kids Network from 1994 to 1998. In the original comic book universe, Kaine became the second Scarlet Spider and joined the New Warriors in 2014. Spider-Man '94: The Return reprints all five issues of the mini-series at 120 pages for $17.99 and will be on sale May 20.
- Spider-Man '94 #5 by J.M. DeMatteis, Jim Towe and Jim Campbell with VC's Joe Caramagna has been released to comic book stores by Marvel Comics. Featuring a cover by Nick Bradshaw and Rachelle Rosenberg, and variant covers by Dan Jurgens with Brett Breeding and Laura Martin, and John Tyler Christopher, the issue concludes the mini-series revisiting the '90s Spider-Man cartoon. Kaine appears again as a villain. (In 2014, comics set in Marvel's main comic book universe depicted Kaine as a new Scarlet Spider joining the New Warriors.)
- Nova is featured on the preliminary cover art of The Marvel Sketchbook of Dan Dos Santos, an exclusive add-on for the Marvel Art of Dan Dos Santos deluxe artbook Kickstarter campaign. The campaign is run by Clover Press, which has released several books through official licenses with Marvel Comics. The softcover sketchbook features Annihilation-era Nova and is available in several patron tiers (although it's worth noting that the final art may differ from what is displayed). The campaign has more than met its $10,000 goal and will end on Thursday, January 29, at 9 PM Pacific / 12 midnight Eastern.
- Marvel Comics has issued a press release announcing plans for a one-shot starring Jubilee (who as Wondra once served as a member of the New Warriors). Part of the Marvel Voices program, Jubilee: Deadly Reunion #1 will be released on April 29 in recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Writer Gene Luen Yang and artist Michael YG were announced as the creative team. Cover art will be provided by FanYang with variant covers by Ivan Tao and Derrick Chew. Marvel describes the one-shot as follows:
The saga kicks off when Jubilee’s long-lost cousin shows up at the X-Men’s doorstep—with mutant powers of his own and a mission that will force Jubilee to explore her Chinese heritage and family history in a profound way!
- Marvel Comics announced yesterday details about the crossover one-shot Marvel/DC: Spider-Man/Superman #1, which will include a wraparound variant cover by Kaare Andrews. The cover includes Ben Reilly, aka the Scarlet Spider, in the bottom center battling Superman villain Brainiac. The issue arrives in comic book stores in April 2026. The issue will be preceded by DC's similarly titled but different comic DC/Marvel: Superman/Spider-Man #1 in March, so be sure to be specific about which issue you want (or both) when pre-ordering at your comic book shop. Details released so far about both one-shots do not indicate that Ben Reilly, Kaine, or any other Spider-related former New Warriors will appear in any of the stories, but we'll keep an eye on both comics for any surprises. While not announced prior to release, Nova had a surprise cameo appearance in last year's Marvel/DC: Deadpool/Batman #1, so anything is possible. Source: Marvel.com
- New Warriors founders Nova, Firestar and Justice all have surprise cameo appearances in Avengers #34, released today to comic book stores by Marvel Comics. The cameos occur in the issue's backup story by Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Bagley, John Dell, Scott Hanna and Frank D'Armata with VC's Cory Petit.
- Today also saw the release of Uncanny X-Men #22 by Gail Simone, David Marquez and Matthew Wilson with VC's Clayton Cowles. The series returns after a 3-month hiatus due to the Age of Revelation event. The series co-stars Jubilee, who was a member of the 2007 New Warriors series when she was using the code-name Wondra.
- The Nova Prime Page has put out a call for submissions for the third Rocket Boosters fanzine. To celebrate Nova's 50th anniversary, the fanzine will publish material by comics creators and fans. Artists under 18 years old are encouraged to submit. Stories and art can be sent to xandarradio@gmail.com.
- Nova: Centurion writer Jed MacKay is participating in this week's AMA at the League of Comic Geeks. Registered users can post up to two questions now, which he will answer on Thursday, January 15. As he mentions on Bluesky, the AMA is to promote Marc Spector: Moon Knight #1, another comic book series written by Jed MacKay, which goes on-sale February 11, but any questions, including questions about Nova: Centurion are fair game.
- Reviews begin to roll in for Nova: Centurion #3 and it looks like we have a hit:
- Scott Redmond of Comicon calls it a "grand issue" and a "return to form" for Nova, rating it 9 out of 10.
- Collier Jennings of AIPT praises it for its unpredictability, rating it 8 out of 10.
- Comic Book Roundup review consensus currently gives the issue an average rating of 8.5 out of 10 (and an 8.5 for the entire series so far).
- League of Comic Geeks reader consensus currently shows a 4.0 out of 5 based on over 250 reviews.
- Nova: Centurion #3 by Jed MacKay, Álvaro López, Matteo Della Fonte and Mattia Iacono with VC's Joe Caramagna has been released to comic book stores by Marvel Comics. Featuring a cover by Alessandro Cappuccio and Rachelle Rosenberg, and variant covers by Clayton Crain, Jan Bazaldua with Erick Arciniega, and Tribute Games with Dotemu, the issue stars New Warriors founding member Nova. Marvel described the issue with the following:
NOVA ON THE VERGE! An old grudge from the Annihilation War comes due as NOVA and RAVENOUS throw down with credits - to say nothing of life and death! - in the balance! Will Rich Rider survive to see a positive number in his bank account?! All is not as it seems, though, and crew member CAMMI will make a discovery that changes everything!
- A preliminary look at a variant cover for Nova: Centurion #5 by artist Partha Pratim Sarkar has been released by Marvel Comics. The issue is scheduled to be released March 4, 2026. To pre-order a copy, ask your comic book store before February 2nd. Source: Nova Prime Page
